If you're a human being living on planet earth, chances are that you know what stress feels like. Stress sucks because it can lead to all kinds of other issues like insomnia, digestive disfunction, high blood pressure, depression...the list goes on and on. Luckily, one answer to all of the above is something that we humans also innately share: our breath.
This basic technique of 4-7-8 breathing is a favorite of the well respected Dr. Andrew Weil , and a staple in his teachings. I love it because it's so darn simple, quick and EFFECTIVE that even non believers (like my father) are instantly converted upon giving it a try. I call it my "mind bath" because afterward I always feel like I've just had a nice long soak. But what this breath cycle is actually doing, is triggering your brain to release calming neurotransmitters called GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) while introducing more oxygen and less disease-causing carbon dioxide.
